Positioning for Coaches + Service Providers: How to Get Clear on What You Want to Be Known For
If your website copy feels impossible to write, your content keeps jumping between five different topics and you’re forever tweaking your bio because nothing quite feels right… you might not have a copy or content problem.
You might have a positioning problem.
And before you panic at the word positioning, it really doesn’t need to be some huge, complicated brand strategy exercise.
For a coach or service provider, positioning is essentially about getting clear on a few important things:
Who do you want to work with?
What do you want to be known for?
What do you want people to understand about the value of your work?
And why should the right person choose you over another good option?
Once those decisions are clearer, soooo many of the other marketing decisions you’ve been overthinking become easier too.
What does positioning actually mean for a coach or service provider?
Positioning is the place you want to occupy in the mind of the person you’d love to work with. If someone came across your business today, what would you want them to quickly understand about you?
Maybe you’re a leadership coach, but you don’t want to be remembered simply as another leadership coach. You want to be known for helping newly promoted senior leaders stop second-guessing themselves and lead with more confidence and authority.
Or maybe you’re a nutritionist, but your real point of difference is helping women improve their health without tracking every calorie or making food another full-time job.
That extra layer matters. Because “leadership coach” tells me the category you belong to. Clear positioning starts telling me why I should pay attention to you specifically.
Signs your positioning might be a little fuzzy
A positioning problem doesn’t always look like a positioning problem. It can look like:
constantly rewriting your Instagram or LinkedIn bio
struggling to explain what you do without giving someone a five-minute backstory
creating content about aaaall the things you know rather than a few things you want to become known for
having several offers that all seem equally important
attracting people who aren’t quite the right fit
looking at competitors for inspiration because you’re unsure what you should be saying
having a nice-looking website that still doesn’t quite communicate why someone should choose YOU
And very often, it shows up when you try to rebuild your website. You think you just need to choose some fonts and write a homepage… then suddenly you’re asking:
Who exactly am I talking to?
Which offer should be most prominent?
What do I actually want to be known for now?
Which testimonials prove the things I want people to believe?
What makes the way I work different?
And suddenly the website has become 47 different business decisions 😂
Your positioning affects much more than your messaging
This is the bit I think gets missed. Positioning doesn’t just determine the sentence underneath your logo. It influences almost everything about how your business shows up online.
Your messaging
If you know exactly who you’re speaking to and what you want them to understand, writing becomes much easier. You stop trying to say everything and start reinforcing the ideas you actually want to own.
Your website
You know which offer deserves the most attention, what needs to appear on the homepage, and what proof will help someone feel ready to enquire.
Your content
Instead of staring at a blank Canva document wondering what to post, you have a much clearer set of conversations you want to be associated with.
Your branding + imagery
Even the visual side becomes easier. A coach positioning themselves for senior executives should probably create a very different visual world from someone working with women who want a more relaxed relationship with food. The colours, photography, typography and overall feel should reinforce the position you’re trying to build.
Your testimonials
You stop choosing testimonials just because somebody said you were “lovely to work with”. You start looking for proof of the specific outcomes, expertise, and qualities you want people to associate with you.
Clear positioning doesn’t mean boxing yourself in
I think this is one of the biggest fears people have. They think getting specific means: “I can never talk about anything else again.” It doesn’t.
You’re simply deciding what you want someone to remember you for first. You can have twenty years of experience, multiple interests and a huge amount of knowledge. Your potential client doesn’t need to understand every layer of that within thirty seconds of finding you.
They need a clear entry point. A useful question to ask yourself is: If one of my dream clients recommended me to a friend tomorrow, what would I LOVE them to say I’m the person to go to for?
And then: What would I want them to say is different about the way I do it?
Those two questions alone can uncover a lot.
Good positioning makes you easier to choose
Being great at what you do and being easy to choose are two different things. You can have incredible experience, amazing results, and clients who adore you… but if somebody discovering you online has to work really hard to understand who you help, what you actually do or why your approach is different, a lot of that value stays hidden.
Clear positioning helps bring it to the surface. And once that foundation is there, your website, messaging, content and brand have something much stronger to build from. Rather than creating more marketing for the sake of creating marketing, everything starts pointing in the same direction.
And THAT is when your online presence starts making it much easier for the right clients to see, trust + choose you.
